Biography
Gabriella Cristiani is an Italian film editor. She began her career as an assistant to editor Franco Arcalli on Bernardo Bertolucci's Last Tango in Paris (1972) and 1900 (1976). She took over as editor on Bertolucci's Luna (1979) after Arcalli's death during production.
Cristiani maintained a long collaboration with Bertolucci, editing Tragedy of a Ridiculous Man (1981), The Last Emperor (1987) – for which she received the Academy Award for Best Film Editing – and The Sheltering Sky (1990), on which she pioneered nonlinear digital editing techniques. She has edited films for directors including Liliana Cavani (Francesco, 1989) and Michelangelo Antonioni (Kumbha Mela, 1989), and directed the feature Ladies Room (1999). She was born in Foggia in 1949.
