Biography
Gareth Gwenlan (1937–2016) was a Welsh television producer and director. He began his BBC career as an assistant floor manager and production assistant in the drama department, working on series including Doctor Who, before moving into comedy.
He produced The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin (1976–1979), Butterflies (1978–1983) and To the Manor Born (1979–1981). In 1983 he was appointed Head of BBC Comedy, a post he held until 1990, during which he commissioned numerous series. He succeeded Ray Butt as producer of Only Fools and Horses in 1988 and remained with the series until its conclusion in 2003. Later credits include producing and directing High Hopes for BBC Wales.
Gwenlan was appointed OBE in 2013 for services to broadcasting. He died on 8 May 2016.
