Biography

Gary Chang is an American composer and musician. He was born on 22 February 1953 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He studied at Carnegie Mellon University and the California Institute of the Arts, and trained in electronic music under Morton Subotnick.

Chang began his film career as a session musician and synthesizer programmer, contributing to recordings by artists including Herbie Hancock and Weather Report. His first film scoring credit was additional music for The Breakfast Club (1985). He launched his solo scoring career with 52 Pick-Up (1986) and went on to compose scores for more than 70 films and television productions, often in the action and thriller genres. Notable credits include Under Siege (1992), Sniper (1993), The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996), The Substitute (1996), Double Team (1997), Storm of the Century (1999) and Rose Red (2002). He has collaborated frequently with directors John Frankenheimer and Craig R. Baxley.

Chang received a BMI Film Music Award for Under Siege in 1993.
