Biography

Gary Slutkin is a physician and epidemiologist. He founded the Chicago Project for Violence Prevention, operating as CeaseFire and later Cure Violence Global, which uses public health strategies to reduce urban violence by treating it as a contagious disease.

Slutkin previously directed interventions for the World Health Organization on tuberculosis, cholera and AIDS epidemics in Africa and Asia. He appears as himself in the 2011 documentary The Interrupters, directed by Steve James, which follows the work of violence interrupters in Chicago. He has also appeared on television programmes including Nova (2019) and Through the Wormhole (2017).
