Biography
Geoffrey S. Fletcher is an American screenwriter and film director. Born on 4 October 1970 in New London, Connecticut, he graduated from Harvard College with a degree in psychology and earned an MFA from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. He wrote and directed the short film Magic Markers while a student, later teaching screenwriting and directing at Columbia University and NYU Tisch.
Fletcher’s first produced screenplay was for the film Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire (2009), directed by Lee Daniels. The film brought him the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, making him the first African American to win an Oscar in a writing category. He made his feature directorial debut with Violet & Daisy (2013), which he also wrote, and later wrote the screenplay for Trial by Fire (2019).
