Biography

Georg Hartmann was a German actor and director. Born in Magdeburg, he began his career in provincial theatre after the Second World War, with an engagement at the Stadttheater in Plettenberg in 1947–48. He founded his own stage in Rothenburg ob der Tauber in 1953. In Vienna he made his film debut in 1955, directed productions and appeared at the Burgtheater.

Hartmann is known for his role as Willi in the film Cabaret (1972) and as Hollinger in The Serpent's Egg (1977). He appeared regularly in German television from the late 1950s, including as Semjon in the miniseries So weit die Füße tragen (1959), and took supporting roles in numerous TV plays and series over the following two decades. He later returned to theatre work, including at the Theater in der Josefstadt in Vienna.
