Biography
George Carney (21 November 1887 – 9 December 1947) was a British comedian and film actor. Born in Bristol, he worked at the Liverpool Cotton Exchange, in a furniture business and in the Belfast shipyards before making his stage debut in a 1906 pantomime in Nottingham. His first London appearance came the following year as one half of the double act Carney and Armstrong, which toured Britain, Australia and South Africa. He later performed solo revues and sketches before entering films.
From the early 1930s Carney appeared as a character actor in numerous British productions, often in working-class roles. His credits include In Which We Serve (1942) as Mr. Blake, I Know Where I'm Going! (1945) as Mr. Webster, Love on the Dole (1941) and Brighton Rock (1948) as Phil Corkery. He was the uncle of actor Leonard Williams.
