Biography
Giorgos Fountas, also credited as George Foundas, was a Greek actor in film, theatre and television. Born on 13 February 1924 in Mavrolithari, he studied at the Drama School of the Athens Conservatory and made his first film appearance in 1944.
He gained wider recognition in the 1950s and 1960s with roles in Stella (1955), Never on Sunday (1960) and Zorba the Greek (1964), in which he played Mavrandoni. He also appeared in the American productions America America (1963) and received Best Actor awards at the Thessaloniki Film Festival in 1966 and 1967. From the 1970s he worked increasingly in television, notably in the series O Hristos xanastavronetai (1975–1976). Fountas died in Athens on 28 November 2010.
