Biography
George Grizzard (born George Cooper Grizzard Jr.) was an American actor of stage, film and television. He was born on 1 April 1928 in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, and raised in Washington, DC. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and began his professional career at Washington's Arena Stage before moving to New York.
Grizzard made his Broadway debut in The Desperate Hours (1955). He originated the role of Nick in the 1962 premiere of Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for the 1996 revival of Albee's A Delicate Balance. His film credits include Advise & Consent (1962), Comes a Horseman (1978) and Seems Like Old Times (1980), in which he played the Governor.
He received a Primetime Emmy Award and a Grammy Award, among other honours. Grizzard died on 2 October 2007 in Manhattan.
