Biography
George Voskovec, also known as Jiří Voskovec, was a Czech-American actor born Jiří Wachsmann on 19 June 1905 in Sázava, Bohemia, then part of Austria-Hungary. He was associated for much of his early career with actor and playwright Jan Werich, with whom he formed the Liberated Theatre in Prague. He left Czechoslovakia in 1939 and settled permanently in the United States after 1948, becoming a US citizen in 1955.
In the US he appeared in supporting roles in films including 12 Angry Men (1957) as Juror #11, The Bravados (1958), BUtterfield 8 (1960), The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965) and The Boston Strangler (1968). He also worked extensively in theatre, winning an Obie Award for his performance in Uncle Vanya, and appeared in television series such as Mission: Impossible and Hawaii Five-O. He died on 1 July 1981.
