Biography
Georges Annenkov, also credited as George Annenkov and born Yuri Pavlovich Annenkov, was a Russian-French costume and set designer. He trained as a painter and stage designer in St Petersburg before emigrating from the Soviet Union in 1924, first to Germany and then to France, where he became naturalised.
He worked on more than sixty films from the 1920s to the 1960s. Early credits include costume design on Faust (1926). He collaborated frequently with Max Ophüls on La Ronde (1950), Le Plaisir (1952), The Earrings of Madame de... (1953) and Lola Montès (1955). Annenkov received an Academy Award nomination for Best Costume Design (Black-and-White), shared with Rosine Delamare, for The Earrings of Madame de.... Other notable films include Mayerling (1936) and The Lovers of Montparnasse (1958). He also designed for theatre and television, and served as president of the French Syndicate of Cinema Technicians from 1945 to 1955.
