Biography
Max Ophüls (also credited as Max Ophuls or Max Opuls) was a German-French film director. He was born Maximillian Oppenheimer on 6 May 1902 in Saarbrücken, Germany, and died on 26 March 1957 in Hamburg, West Germany.
He began his career in theatre in Germany and Austria before directing his first film in 1931. Ophüls worked in Germany until 1933, then in France until 1940, the United States from 1947 to 1950, and France again until his death. His films include Letter from an Unknown Woman (1948), The Reckless Moment (1949), Caught (1949), La Ronde (1950), Le Plaisir (1952), The Earrings of Madame de... (1953) and Lola Montès (1955).
His son, Marcel Ophüls, became a documentary filmmaker.
