Biography

Georges Bidault was a French politician and Resistance leader. Born in Moulins in 1899, he studied history and became a journalist before the Second World War. He played a central role in the French Resistance, succeeding Jean Moulin as president of the Conseil national de la Résistance in 1943.

After the Liberation he served as foreign minister in the provisional government and later held the post on three further occasions. He was twice prime minister during the Fourth Republic and remained active in politics until the early 1960s. Bidault appeared as himself in the 1974 documentary Hearts and Minds, recalling events surrounding the 1954 Geneva Conference.

He died in Cambo-les-Bains in 1983.
