Biography
Gerard Soeteman (1 July 1936 – 16 May 2025) was a Dutch screenwriter. Born in Rotterdam, he began his career in television, writing the series Floris (1969).
He collaborated frequently with director Paul Verhoeven. Their joint credits include the screenplays for Turkish Delight (1973), Soldier of Orange (1977), Spetters (1980), The 4th Man (1983) and Black Book (2006). Soeteman also wrote the screenplay for The Assault (1986), which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. In 2017 he received a Gouden Kalf award for his contribution to Dutch film culture.
