Biography
Robert Piet Houwer (also credited as Rob Houwer) was a Dutch film producer. He studied at the University of Television and Film in Munich and began his career in Germany in the 1960s, producing films for directors including Volker Schlöndorff, Peter Fleischmann and Michael Verhoeven. In 1964 he directed the short film Anmeldung, which received a Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival.
Houwer returned to the Netherlands in 1971 and collaborated extensively with Paul Verhoeven. He produced Business Is Business (1971), Turkish Delight (1973), Katie Tippel (1975), Soldier of Orange (1977) and The Fourth Man (1983). Turkish Delight became the most successful Dutch film at the box office and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He later produced The Little Blonde Death (1993), for which he received a Golden Calf for Best Film. Houwer was appointed Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau.
