Biography
Gianni Di Gregorio is an Italian screenwriter, director and actor. Born in Rome on 19 February 1949, he trained as a stage actor and director at the Drama School of Alessandro Fersen. He began writing screenplays in the second half of the 1980s, including for films directed by Felice Farina and Marco Colli.
From the mid-1990s he collaborated with Matteo Garrone as screenwriter, assistant director and actor. Their joint work includes the 2008 film Gomorrah, for which Di Gregorio shared the screenplay credit with Garrone, Roberto Saviano, Maurizio Braucci, Ugo Chiti and Massimo Gaudioso; the script won the European Film Award and a David di Donatello. Di Gregorio made his directorial debut the same year with Mid-August Lunch (Pranzo di ferragosto), which he also wrote and in which he starred. He has since directed and written several further features, among them The Salt of Life (2011), Good for Nothing (2014) and Citizens of the World (2019).
