Biography
Gianni Quaranta was an Italian production designer and art director. Born on 30 August 1943 in Arsiè, he died on 14 September 2025 in Rome. He won the Academy Award for Best Art Direction for his work on A Room with a View (1986).
Quaranta studied fine arts at the Brera Academy in Milan before moving to Rome to work in theatre. He collaborated frequently with Franco Zeffirelli on films including Brother Sun, Sister Moon (1972) and Jesus of Nazareth (1977), and with Bernardo Bertolucci on 1900 (1976). Other notable film credits include Farinelli (1994) and The Legend of the Holy Drinker (1988).
He received additional Academy Award nominations for La Traviata (1983) and Brother Sun, Sister Moon, and won a BAFTA Award for Best Production Design for La Traviata. Quaranta also designed sets for numerous operas at major theatres including La Scala and the Metropolitan Opera.
