Biography
Gottfried John (1942–2014) was a German stage, screen and voice actor. He was born in Berlin and began his career in theatre, appearing at the Schiller Theatre before working with director Rainer Werner Fassbinder on several projects from the mid-1970s, including Mother Küsters Goes to Heaven (1975), Despair (1978), The Marriage of Maria Braun (1979) and Berlin Alexanderplatz (1980).
John became known internationally for his role as the corrupt General Arkady Ourumov in the James Bond film GoldenEye (1995). Other film credits include Fedora (1978), Asterix and Obelix Take On Caesar (1999) as Julius Caesar, for which he received the Bavarian Film Award for Best Supporting Actor, Proof of Life (2000) and Ruby Red (2013).
