Goya Toledo can make a difficult character worth staying with. Her Valeria in Amores Perros is a persuasive reason to seek her out: we care about someone we might prefer to avoid.

In Amores Perros (2000), Goya Toledo lets Valeria be difficult company and leaves us to decide how much of her we can take. There is no reassuring insistence that we should like her, and no invitation to enjoy disliking her either. We felt for her even when we wanted some distance, because Toledo makes her distress count without excusing her behaviour. It is a performance we recommend warmly.
The lead in Mararía (1998) preceded her international breakthrough with Alejandro González Iñárritu in Amores Perros. Her subsequent work has remained largely in Spanish cinema and television, including the psychological thriller Killing Words (2004) and Maktub (2011). The recurring casting is of women having to cope with personal or social crises. That suits an actor who can make distress uncomfortable without reducing a character to her troubles.
Gael García Bernal plays Octavio with an urgency that makes patience seem impossible, while Emilio Echevarría brings a quieter sadness to El Chivo. Toledo belongs beside them because Valeria also keeps us watching without requiring our approval. Iñárritu's ensemble benefits from those differences: Echevarría can allow some tenderness into the film without making Toledo's harder company feel misplaced. The actors are especially valuable when the connections between the stories feel strained, a flaw we would not wave away simply because the performances are strong. The film is gripping, but it sometimes needs its cast to persuade us past a contrivance.
The risk with such casting is that an actor becomes the reliable person brought in whenever a story needs anguish. We would be interested to see Toledo given more room outside those crises, rather than asked to prove once again that she can make suffering convincing. Amores Perros gives us ample reason to follow her work. Start there, with the warning that its graphic cruelty to dogs makes it a difficult evening.
Biography
Goya Toledo is a Spanish actress and model. Born Gregoria Micaela Toledo Machín on 24 September 1969 in Arrecife, Lanzarote, she trained at the Cristina Rota School of Dramatic Arts in Madrid. She began her career as a model before making her acting debut in 1993.
Toledo is best known for portraying Valeria in Alejandro González Iñárritu's Amores Perros (2000). Her other notable film roles include the title character in Mararía (1998), for which she was nominated for the Goya Award for Best New Actress; Laura in Killing Words (2003); and Carmen Castro in The 13 Roses (2007). She has also appeared in television series including Paco's Men (2005) as Reyes Sánchez-Bilbao.
In 2003 she received the Shooting Stars Award at the Berlin International Film Festival.
