Biography
Grande Otelo, born Sebastião Bernardes de Souza Prata, was a Brazilian actor, comedian, singer, composer and producer. He was born on 18 October 1915 in Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, and died on 26 November 1993 in Roissy-en-France, France.
He began his career in the circus and revue theatre before appearing in films from 1935. He became known for his long partnership with Oscarito in chanchada comedies of the 1940s and 1950s. He also appeared in Cinema Novo productions and international films.
His notable screen roles include the title character in Macunaíma (1969) and the station master in Fitzcarraldo (1982). He is credited with appearances in around 100 films.
