Biography
Gustav Fröhlich was a German actor and film director. Born in Hanover, he worked briefly as a newspaper editor and author of popular novels before entering the theatre. He made his film debut in the early 1920s and appeared in secondary roles in several silent films.
Fröhlich achieved his breakthrough as Freder Fredersen in Fritz Lang's Metropolis (1927). He continued as a leading man in German cinema through the 1930s and 1940s, appearing in films such as Asphalt (1929), and later directed several features. He received the German Film Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1973 and made occasional screen appearances until the early 1980s.
