Biography
Gyearbuor Asante was a Ghanaian actor. Born Frederick Christopher Kwabena Gyearbuor Asante Erskine in Accra on 4 November 1941, he moved to the United Kingdom in 1967 and trained at the Mountview Theatre School. He worked in British television and film from the early 1970s, often billed as Christopher Asante, until the mid-1990s.
His credits include the role of Geoffrey in The Dogs of War (1980), appearances in episodes of Space: 1999 (1975), Mind Your Language (1977) and The Professionals (1977), and Rev Macpherson in the film Local Hero (1983). He is best remembered for playing Matthew, a Gambian mature student, in the Channel 4 sitcom Desmond's (1989–1994).
Asante returned to Ghana in 1995 and was named the country's Cultural Ambassador for services to acting. He died in Accra on 2 August 2000.
