Biography
Gyula Hernádi was a Hungarian writer and screenwriter. Born in Oroszvár (now Rusovce, Slovakia) in 1926, he began publishing poetry and short stories in the mid-1950s before turning to screenwriting.
He is best known for his long collaboration with director Miklós Jancsó, writing or co-writing the screenplays for The Round-Up (1966), The Red and the White (1967), Red Psalm (1972), Adoption (1975) and many others. He also wrote novels and plays, and worked as a dramaturg at several Hungarian theatres.
Hernádi received the József Attila Prize in 1976 and the Kossuth Prize in 1999. He died in Budapest in 2005.
