Biography
Hans Janowitz (2 December 1890 – 25 May 1954) was a German author and screenwriter. Born in Poděbrady, Austria-Hungary (now in the Czech Republic), he served as an officer in the Austrian army during the First World War and returned as a pacifist. After the war he met Carl Mayer in Berlin, and the two wrote the screenplay for the 1920 film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, directed by Robert Wiene.
Janowitz contributed to several other silent films, including Der Januskopf (1920) and Ewiger Strom (1920). He later worked as a writer and translator, publishing novels such as Jazz (1927) and volumes of poetry. In 1939 he emigrated to the United States, where he established a perfume manufacturing company in New York; he died there in 1954.
