Biography
Heinrich George, born Georg August Friedrich Hermann Schulz on 9 October 1893 in Stettin, Pomerania (now Szczecin, Poland), was a German stage and film actor. He made his stage debut in 1912 and appeared in his first film in 1921. During the Weimar Republic he worked in Berlin theatres, including with directors Erwin Piscator and Max Reinhardt, and founded the Schauspielertheater company in 1923.
George is known for his film roles including Grot in Fritz Lang’s Metropolis (1927) and Franz Biberkopf in Berlin Alexanderplatz (1931). He also appeared in Dreyfus (1930). After 1933 he acted in several Nazi propaganda films, among them Jud Süß (1940) as Karl Alexander, Duke of Württemberg, and Kolberg (1945).
He was married to actress Berta Drews and was the father of actor Götz George. George was arrested by Soviet authorities in 1945 and died on 25 September 1946 in the Sachsenhausen internment camp.
