Biography
Heinz Herald was a German writer, dramaturg and screenwriter. Born Georg Pinner on 24 October 1890 in Birnbaum, Posen (now Międzychód, Poland), he studied in Berlin and began working as a dramaturg at the Deutsches Theater from 1910. He was closely associated with Max Reinhardt, co-founded theatrical ventures including the literary cabaret Schall und Rauch, and held editorial and leadership roles at Reinhardt theatres and the Berliner Theater before emigrating in 1933.
After settling in the United States, Herald worked as a screenwriter in Hollywood from the mid-1930s and became a member of the Screen Writers Guild. He received an Academy Award for Best Writing, Screenplay (shared with Norman Reilly Raine and Géza Herczeg) for The Life of Emile Zola (1937), on which he is also credited with the story; he was further nominated for the original screenplay of Dr. Ehrlich's Magic Bullet (1940). Other screen credits include The Great Flamarion (1945) and The Vicious Circle (1948). He returned to Germany in 1953, worked as an artistic adviser and broadcaster, and died on 22 July 1964 in Kreuth, Bavaria.
