Biography
Heinz Rühmann was a German film actor who appeared in over 100 films between 1926 and 1993. Born in Essen, he trained as an actor in Munich and began his career in the theatre before making his film debut in the mid-1920s.
Rühmann achieved stardom with his role in the 1930 musical Die Drei von der Tankstelle. He remained a leading comedic actor through the 1930s and 1940s, appearing in films such as The Punch Bowl (1944). After the war he established himself as a character actor in titles including The Captain from Köpenick (1956) and It Happened in Broad Daylight (1958). His only English-language role was as Lowenthal in Ship of Fools (1965). Later credits include Faraway, So Close! (1993).
