Biography
Helen Black is a British screenwriter and novelist. She grew up in Pontefract, West Yorkshire, studied law at Hull University and worked as a solicitor specialising in childcare before turning to writing.
Her early novels include the Lilly Valentine legal thriller series, beginning with Damaged Goods (2005). She won the Kudos North Award in 2017 for her television script Galaxy, which led to writing credits on series including Clink (2019), Death in Paradise (2021) and Grantchester (2023).
Black co-wrote the second series of Time (2023) with Jimmy McGovern. Her single film Life and Death in the Warehouse (2022) was nominated for a BAFTA Cymru award. She created and wrote The Wives (2024) for Channel 5.
