Biography
Helen Haye (born Helen Mary Hay) was a British stage and film actress. She began her stage career in 1898 and made her London debut in 1911 as Gertrude in Hamlet. Her film work started in 1916 with Honour in Pawn.
She appeared in numerous British films, often in supporting roles as aristocratic or maternal figures. Notable credits include Mrs. Hillcrist in The Skin Game (1931), Mrs. Jordan in The 39 Steps (1935), Mrs. Sedley in The Spy in Black (1939), Lady Rohan in The Man in Grey (1943), Countess Vronsky in Anna Karenina (1948), Mrs. Hepworth in Hobson's Choice (1954), and the Duchess of York in Richard III (1955). She frequently collaborated with director Alexander Korda and taught at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
Haye was married to Ernest Attenborough. She died in London on 1 September 1957.
