Biography
Henning von Gierke (born 22 December 1947) is a German painter, set designer, production designer and art director. He trained as an autodidact painter and began working in film and theatre in the early 1970s.
He collaborated extensively with director Werner Herzog, serving as production designer on The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser (1974), Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979) and Fitzcarraldo (1982). He also worked as set decorator or set designer on Heart of Glass (1976), Stroszek (1977) and Woyzeck (1979).
Von Gierke received the German Film Award in Gold for The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser and the Silver Bear for outstanding single achievement for Nosferatu the Vampyre at the 1979 Berlin International Film Festival. After Fitzcarraldo he shifted focus towards painting, opera design and teaching.
