Biography
Henry Skjær (1899–1991) was a Danish opera singer and actor. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Music and the opera school of the Royal Danish Theatre while working as a clerk. He made his stage debut in 1924 as Pizarro in Beethoven's Fidelio and joined the Royal Danish Theatre as a permanent member in 1930, remaining until his retirement in 1973. Among his principal roles was the Count in Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, which he performed nearly 200 times.
Skjær appeared in a number of Danish films and television productions, often in supporting parts. These included the role of the Doctor in Carl Theodor Dreyer's Ordet (1955) and an opera singer in For Freedom and Justice (1949). He was appointed Royal Chamber Singer in 1947 and received the Order of the Dannebrog.
