Biography

Herbert Strabel (14 October 1927 – 21 October 2017) was a German production designer, art director and set decorator. Born in Berlin, he shared the Academy Award for Best Art Direction–Set Decoration for his work on the 1972 film Cabaret with Rolf Zehetbauer and Hans Jürgen Kiebach.

Strabel contributed to numerous international productions, including art direction on The Serpent's Egg (1977), Despair (1978), From the Life of the Marionettes (1980), Lili Marleen (1981), The NeverEnding Story (1984) and Enemy Mine (1985). He also worked as set decorator on Brass Target (1978) and received an Emmy nomination for art direction on the 1982 television film Inside the Third Reich.
