Biography
Howard Block was an American cinematographer and camera operator. Born on 29 June 1925 in New York City, he began his career as an assistant camera operator on films including On the Waterfront (1954) and worked on television series such as The Honeymooners (1955-1956). Over four decades he served as camera operator on features including The Godfather (1972), Rocky III (1982) and The Nude Bomb (1980), and on series such as Kojak, The Rockford Files and Magnum, P.I..
Block worked as director of photography on episodes of Murder, She Wrote (1986-1987), Moonlighting (1989), Cheers (1990), Crazy Like a Fox (1986) and She-Wolf of London (1990-1991). He also served as second-unit director of photography on series including Magnum, P.I. and Parenthood. He received the President's Award in 1994 and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999 from the Society of Camera Operators. Block died on 5 February 2005 in Tarzana, California.
