Biography
Howard Duff (1913–1990) was an American actor who worked in film, television, radio and stage. Born Howard Green Duff in Charleston, Washington (now part of Bremerton), he began his career in radio during the Second World War, notably playing Dashiell Hammett’s detective Sam Spade from 1946 to 1950.
Duff’s film credits include The Naked City (1948), A Wedding (1978) and No Way Out (1987). He is also known for his role as Dustin Hoffman’s attorney John Shaunessy in Kramer vs. Kramer (1979). On television he appeared in series such as The Twilight Zone, Murder, She Wrote and Magnum, P.I..
Duff was married to actress and director Ida Lupino from 1951 to 1984; the couple appeared together in several productions, including the sitcom Mr. Adams and Eve (1957–1958).
