Biography
Howard Lindsay, born Herman Nelke, was an American playwright, librettist, director, actor and theatrical producer. He wrote the screenplay for the 1936 musical Swing Time with Allan Scott.
Lindsay is best known for his long collaboration with Russel Crouse. Their plays include Life With Father (1939), in which he starred opposite his wife Dorothy Stickney, the Pulitzer Prize-winning State of the Union (1945) and the book for the musical The Sound of Music (1959). He also appeared in the 1957 television production of Cinderella.
