Biography
Howard Smith was an American journalist, film director and producer. Born in Brooklyn on 10 December 1936, he began his career as a photographer before becoming a columnist for The Village Voice and a radio broadcaster.
Smith directed the 1972 documentary Marjoe, which he co-produced with Sarah Kernochan and which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. He followed this with Gizmo! (1977), a documentary compiled from archival footage of unusual inventions.
He appeared as a TV commentator in George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead (1978). Smith died in Manhattan on 1 May 2014.
