Biography

Hubert Selby Jr. (1928–2004) was an American novelist and screenwriter. He wrote the 1978 novel Requiem for a Dream, on which the 2000 film of the same name was based, and co-wrote its screenplay with director Darren Aronofsky. He is also known for the 1964 novel Last Exit to Brooklyn, adapted as a 1989 film, and for writing the screenplay for Fear X (2003).

Selby was born in Brooklyn, New York, and had no formal writing training. He appeared in small roles in the film adaptations of both Last Exit to Brooklyn and Requiem for a Dream. He taught creative writing at the University of Southern California for more than twenty years.
