Biography
Hugh Masekela was a South African trumpeter, singer and composer who appeared in several music documentaries. He is credited as Self (archive footage) in Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) (2021) and Monterey Pop (1968).
Born in Witbank on 4 April 1939, Masekela became known as a leading figure in South African jazz and an anti-apartheid activist. He achieved international success with the 1968 instrumental hit 'Grazing in the Grass' and compositions such as 'Soweto Blues' and 'Bring Him Back Home'. Masekela died in Johannesburg on 23 January 2018.
