Biography
Hugh Walpole was a New Zealand-born British novelist and screenwriter. Born in Auckland in 1884, he was educated in England and published his first novel in 1909. He wrote more than thirty novels, including the Herries Chronicle series beginning with Rogue Herries (1930), as well as short stories, plays and memoirs.
In the mid-1930s Walpole worked in Hollywood. He provided the adaptation for the 1935 MGM film David Copperfield, in which he also appeared as the vicar, and wrote the screenplay for Little Lord Fauntleroy (1936). He was appointed CBE in 1918 and knighted in 1937. Walpole died in 1941 near Keswick, Cumberland.
