Biography
Hugo Alfvén was a Swedish composer, conductor and violinist. Born in Stockholm on 1 May 1872, he studied at the Royal College of Music there and later in Berlin and Paris. He served as director of music at Uppsala University for nearly three decades and conducted choirs and orchestras across Sweden.
Alfvén is best known for his orchestral works, particularly the Swedish Rhapsody No. 1 (Midsommarvaka), Op. 19, composed in 1903. His music has been used in films including The Wind Is My Lover (1949) and One Summer of Happiness (1951), as well as in an episode of the television series The Simpsons (1989). He died in Falun on 8 May 1960.
