Biography
Hugo Butler (4 May 1914 – 7 January 1968) was a Canadian-American screenwriter. Born in Calgary, Alberta, he began working in Hollywood in the late 1930s after a period as a journalist and playwright. His early credits include the screenplay for A Christmas Carol (1938) and an uncredited contribution to Blossoms in the Dust (1941).
Butler was blacklisted in the 1950s after being named to the House Un-American Activities Committee. He and his wife, actress Jean Rouverol, lived in Mexico for over a decade, where he wrote under pseudonyms including H.B. Addis, Hugo Mozo and Philip Ansell Roll, and collaborated with directors such as Luis Buñuel on Robinson Crusoe (1954) and The Young One (1960). Other notable screenplays from this period and later include The Prowler (1951), He Ran All the Way (1951) and Autumn Leaves (1956). In 1997 the Writers Guild of America restored several of his credits posthumously.
