Biography
I. S. Johar was an Indian actor, writer, producer and director. Born Indra Sen Johar on 16 February 1920 in Talagang, British India (now in Pakistan), he held an MA in Economics and Politics and an LLB. He entered the film industry after the Partition of India and made his acting debut in the 1949 Hindi film Ek Thi Ladki.
Johar appeared in numerous Hindi films from the 1950s to the early 1980s and in several international productions. He played Gasim in Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Gupta in North West Frontier (1959) and Mr. Choudhury in Death on the Nile (1978). He also wrote and directed films, including the partition-themed Nastik (1954) and comedies such as Johar Mehmood in Goa.
He received a BAFTA nomination for Best Actor for his performance in Harry Black (1958), becoming the first Indian actor nominated in that category. Johar died on 10 March 1984 in Bombay.
