Biography
Ian MacDonald was an American actor active in film and television from the 1940s to the 1960s. Born Ulva W. Pippy on 28 June 1914 in Great Falls, Montana, he also worked under the name Ladd Pippy early in his career. He attended schools in Helena, graduated from Intermountain College in 1934, taught school briefly and later studied drama at the Pasadena Community Playhouse before entering films.
He is best known for playing the outlaw Frank Miller in High Noon (1952). MacDonald appeared in supporting roles in numerous Westerns and other films, including White Heat (1949), Johnny Guitar (1954), Apache (1954) and Warlock (1959). He served as a captain in the US Army Signal Corps during the Second World War and later worked as a producer and writer on several low-budget Westerns.
On 17 June 1967 he married nurse Shirley Kannegaard in Santa Monica, California. MacDonald died on 11 April 1978 in Bozeman, Montana.
