Biography
Ian Stokell is a British screenwriter. Born Ian Charles Stokell on 1 June 1959 in London, he holds a BA Honours in Modern Arts (History of Ideas) from Kingston University (1983) and an MA in Physical Education from California State University, Chico (2004). He worked as a journalist, including ten years as Managing Editor of The Washington Post's Newsbytes newswire from 1991 to 2001.
Stokell has a long-term writing partnership with Lesley Paterson. Together they optioned the rights to Erich Maria Remarque's novel All Quiet on the Western Front in 2006 and developed the screenplay over many years. The 2022 film adaptation, co-written with director Edward Berger, earned Stokell a BAFTA Film Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and an Academy Award nomination in the same category. He also served as an executive producer on the film.
