Biography
Irene Sutcliffe (12 July 1924 – 3 May 2019) was an English actress. She trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and began her career in repertory theatre, later touring with the Bristol Old Vic Company and appearing with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Laurence Olivier’s company.
She was best known for playing Maggie Clegg in the ITV soap Coronation Street from 1968 to 1975. Her film roles included the waitress in Withnail & I (1987) and a part in Agatha (1979); she also appeared as Sister Rose in the television series All Creatures Great and Small (1978). Sutcliffe had an extensive stage career that included work at the National Theatre and in the West End.
Her final screen appearance was in the 2015 series The Royals.
