Biography
Irene Worth, born Harriett Elizabeth Abrams, was an American stage and screen actress. She made her Broadway debut in 1943 and moved to Britain in 1944, where she worked with the Old Vic company from 1951 and the Royal Shakespeare Company from 1962. She was educated at UCLA and studied at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.
Worth appeared in films including Nicholas and Alexandra (1971) as the Queen Mother Marie Fedorovna, Orders to Kill (1958), for which she received a BAFTA Award, Deathtrap (1982) and Lost in Yonkers (1993). A three-time Tony Award winner, she received the award for Tiny Alice (1965), Sweet Bird of Youth (1976) and Lost in Yonkers (1991). She was appointed an honorary CBE in 1975.
