Biography
J. Ranelli was an American stage director, writer, translator and educator. Born on 1 March 1938 in New Haven, Connecticut, he graduated from the University of Rochester and Wesleyan University and served in the United States Air Force. He began his career as a reporter before turning to theatre, becoming a founding member of the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center, where he directed for the National Playwrights Conference and helped establish the National Theater Institute.
Ranelli directed and wrote for the stage at venues including the Actors Studio, Manhattan Theatre Club, Long Wharf Theatre and regional theatres across the United States and abroad. His television work included directing an episode of the series Law & Order in 1998 and writing the teleplay for the 1992 television film One More Spring. He taught at institutions such as Wesleyan University, Juilliard, Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Rhode Island.
Ranelli died on 29 November 2019 in New Haven, Connecticut.
