Biography
Jacques Renard is a French director, writer and cinematographer. Born in Béthune in 1944, he began in the camera department on films including Army of Shadows (1969) and worked as assistant camera on The Mother and the Whore (1973), in which he also appeared as Alexandre’s friend.
He served as cinematographer on Jacques Rivette’s Céline and Julie Go Boating (1974). Renard’s first feature as director was Monsieur Albert (1976), which he also wrote. He later directed Blanche et Marie (1985) and numerous television films and series.
Renard has also made documentaries, notably drawing on the oral history of miners in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais coalfield.
