Biography
James Beck was an English actor. Born Stanley James Carroll Beck in Islington, London, he attended Saint Martin's School of Art and served in the British Army as a physical training instructor during national service before beginning his acting career in the theatre.
Beck is best known for playing the cockney spiv Private Joe Walker in the BBC sitcom Dad's Army from 1968 until his death in 1973. He also appeared in other television series including Romany Jones (1972–73) as Bert Jones, and had uncredited roles in films such as Star! (1968) and Carry On Loving (1970).
Beck died on 6 August 1973 in Roehampton, London, aged 44.
