Biography
James David Grout (22 October 1927 – 24 June 2012) was an English actor. He was born in Edmonton, London, and trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He is best known for playing Chief Superintendent Strange in the television series Inspector Morse (1987–2000).
Grout appeared in numerous other television roles, including Granville Bennett in All Creatures Great and Small (1978), Mr Rutley in Goodnight Sweetheart (1993), and Mr Spenlow in David Copperfield (1999). His stage work included a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for the original production of Half a Sixpence in 1965. He was married to Noreen.
